The Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (TIC) for Colombia, Mauricio Lizcano, concluded his participation in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona by showcasing the country’s ongoing digital transformation. The minister signed a memorandum of understanding with Hispasat, a Spanish satellite operator, marking a significant step towards addressing the demand for satellite internet in Colombia.
During the congress, Minister Lizcano engaged in 40 bilateral meetings with global leaders and authorities, fostering alliances to enhance connectivity in remote areas of the country. Additionally, he actively participated in various panels and roundtable discussions, presenting strategies that will position Colombia as a Digital Power (PotencIA Digital).
One of the highlights of the event was the signing of three memorandums of understanding, including agreements with Hughes, DirectTV, and Hispasat. Minister Lizcano expressed optimism about the collaboration with Hispasat, emphasizing the joint effort to explore the feasibility of a satellite project involving the Colombian Presidency, the Spanish Government, and the National Space Commission.

The Colombian presence at the MWC was not only marked by strategic agreements but also by the active participation of 55 Colombian companies, showcasing their products and services to over 100,000 attendees. The stand organized by Procolombia, with support from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (MinTIC), served as a platform to connect with the global community, fostering business opportunities and exploring new avenues.

The congress highlighted the importance of effective collaboration and robust partnerships between the public and private sectors, as well as international cooperation, to strengthen the implementation and efficacy of various programs not only in Colombia but also in other participating countries. Minister Lizcano seized the opportunity to learn from successful experiences that could be adapted in Colombia.
In a closing invitation, Minister Lizcano urged Technology Ministers from Latin America to convene in Bogotá for a meeting to discuss collaborative efforts in regulating, promoting, and ethically managing the use of Artificial Intelligence. This demonstrates Colombia’s commitment to regional cooperation and advancement in the field of technology.
